Back in 1997, an interesting visit to Patagonia, paved the way to our decision of breeding camelids at Cabaña del Malleo, located at the foothills of the Andes, in the province of Neuquén. As a result of decades of mismanagement and over grazing by sheep and goats, the once grass rich Patagonian steepa had turned into a vast arid dessert.
In order to substantiate our project, we decided to breed llamas and alpacas thus, giving birth, sometime later to Cabaña Las Lilas Artesanías. Through the use of autochthonous animals, Cabaña Las Lilas seeks to show that much can be done to improve the current state of affairs. By breeding camelids, such as llama, alpaca or guanaco wool craft, fibers which are on high demand worldwide for its refinement and smoothness, we will help to encourage the implementation of similar projects thus, protecting the environment and contributing to the region’s economic sustainability and social wellbeing. Such is the goal of Cabaña del Malleo. The making of our products begins with the careful breeding and selection of the llama and alpaca herds at Cabaña del Malleo. The conscientious and natural process of manufacture includes: rearing, cropping, spinning, wrap preparation, weaving and fiber staining. Each of our products is handcrafted, traceable and non replicable, and carries the application of ancestral techniques that have been transmitted from generation to generation. The end result is a unique and high quality product. |
